Quick and healthy one pot meal. Perfect first food for toddler. Arisi paruppu Sadam (rice and dal) rice is protein rich filling meal. With minimal ingredients it tastes great. It is a one pot recipe. Arisi paruppu sadam can be prepared in pressure cooker and Instant pot.

  1. Soak Dal and rice for 1 hour in Luke warm water and strain the water
  2. Add little ghee to the pan and melt it in medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic; cook till the onions are translucent. Add tomato and cook till its done
  3. In a cooker separator/vessel add drained dal and rice, saut├ęd onion - tomato mixture, water and all the other ingredients mentioned except the salt and cover the vessel with a lid and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles
  4. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid, add salt and mix well. Add additional ghee if required. Enjoy it hot with Appalam or Potato fry/Vazhakkai fry/Arbi fry/tomato raita
1. Cinnamon, star anise, bay leaf, fennel seeds and other whole garam masala spice can be added for additional flavor
2. Soaking Dal and rice part can be skipped, I do it as occasionally Dal I get here won't cook properly without soaking
3. No-onion no-garlic version of arisi paruppu sadam can also be prepared
4. Vegetables like carrot, peas, beans, beetroot etc. can be added
5. If you are cooking the arisi paruppu sadam directly in pressure cooker add ¼ cup extra water
