In addition, cherupayaru is gluten-free, making it a great alternative to other grains for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.

What is Pachai Payaru Kuzhambu?

Pachai Payaru Kuzhambu is a traditional Kongunadu-style curry made with green gram (moong) beans, cooked with garlic, onions, and freshly crushed spices.

Can I make this recipe without a pressure cooker?

Yes, you can cook the green gram in a pot until it’s soft, but it may take longer than pressure cooking.

What can I serve with Payaru Masiyal?

This kuzhambu tastes best with steamed rice, ghee, papad, or simple vegetable poriyal.

Is green gram healthy?

Can I use yellow moong dal instead of whole green gram?

CAN I SKIP SHALLOTS?

For the most flavorful mung bean dal, use shallots. You can use chopped regular onions instead of shallots.

Ingredients

To Cook

1/4 cup green gram/moong bean

1 tsp oil

1½ cups water

1/4 tsp turmeric powder

1 green chilli

1 tomato

3 garlic cloves

To Coarsely Grind

1/2 tsp cumin seeds

2 red chillies

1/2 tbsp coriander seeds

For Kuzhambu

1 tbsp coconut oil

8 small onions

2 garlic cloves

Required salt

Water as needed

Instructions

  •  Dry roast the green gram until aromatic.

  •  Add water, tomato, garlic, turmeric powder, green chilli, and oil. Mix well and bring to a boil.

  •  Pressure cook for 8 whistles and simmer for 1 minute. Allow the pressure to release naturally.

  •  Mash the cooked mixture well.

  • Coarsely crush cumin seeds, coriander seeds, and red chillies.

  • Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add the crushed spice mixture, small onions, garlic, and salt. Sauté until aromatic.

  • Add the mashed green gram mixture along with a little water if needed. Adjust salt and bring to a boil.

  • Turn off the stove and serve hot with rice.
