Mushroom Pallipalayam is a simple yet bold South Tamil Nadu–style stir fry made with mushrooms, shallots, garlic, red chillies, and plenty of fresh coconut. Inspired by the famous Pallipalayam chicken, this vegetarian version delivers the same rustic flavours with minimal ingredients and zero fuss. It pairs beautifully with rice, rasam, curd rice, or chapati — a perfect weekday recipe that comes together in minutes.

What is Mushroom Pallipalayam?

Mushroom Pallipalayam is a Kongu Nadu–style stir fry made with mushrooms, shallots, garlic, red chillies, curry leaves, and fresh coconut. It’s a vegetarian adaptation of the popular Pallipalayam chicken.

Can I use regular onions instead of shallots?

Yes, but shallots give the dish its authentic flavour. If substituting, use finely chopped regular onions and sauté until lightly golden.

Do mushrooms release water while cooking?

Yes — mushrooms naturally release moisture. Simply cook uncovered after a few minutes to evaporate excess water and get a nice fry texture.

Can I make this recipe without coconut pieces?

You can skip them, but coconut pieces add crunch and the signature Pallipalayam flavour. You may replace with grated coconut if needed.

Which mushrooms work best for this recipe?

Button mushrooms work perfectly, but you can also use cremini or oyster mushrooms for a deeper flavour.

What can I serve Mushroom Pallipalayam with?

It pairs well with rasam rice, sambar rice, curd rice, chapati, or even as a topping for millets and quinoa.
