This Bhai Veetu Thakkali Jam is a classic South Tamil Nadu wedding‑style tomato pachadi made with tomatoes, dates, sugar, ghee‑roasted cashews, and raisins. It’s glossy, sweet, mildly tangy, and beautifully flavored with cardamom—just like the traditional “bhai veetu” spreads served at weddings and special functions. The corn‑flour slurry helps the jam thicken to a perfect spoon‑able consistency, making it ideal with meals or as a festive side.

What is Bhai Veetu Thakkali Jam?

A wedding‑style tomato pachadi made with tomatoes, dates, sugar, ghee‑roasted nuts, and cardamom.

Why add dates to tomato jam?

Dates add natural sweetness and richness, and help the jam thicken without needing too much sugar.

What kind of tomatoes should I use for pachadi?

You can use any variety of tomatoes, but pachadi taste varies according to the tomatoes. Always use ripe tomatoes. Avoid sour ones

Can I reduce Sugar for Kalyana sweet pachadi?

Traditional white sugar is added to the Kalyana pachadi. For a healthier version, you can use brown sugar and jaggery, but the taste might not be similar. The amount of sugar depends on the sourness of tomatoes and individual sweet preferences.

Should I cook sugar to string consistency?

No, you can just add sugar to the cooked tomatoes.

Can I skip the corn flour slurry?

Yes—cook longer to reduce naturally, but the slurry gives a quick, glossy finish.

How do I prevent the jam from sticking?

Cook on medium heat and stir often, especially after adding sugar.

Can I add other flavors?

A pinch of saffron, rose essence, or extra cardamom can enhance the wedding‑style aroma.

How to serve tomato jam?

Serve with meals, chapati, curd rice, or as a sweet side for festive spreads.
