    Kurukku Kalan: A Traditional Kerala Delicacy

    Kurukku Kalan, also known as Katti Kalan, is a traditional Kerala dish made with yam, raw banana, coconut paste, and yogurt. This flavorful curry is a staple in Kerala cuisine and is often served during special occasions like Onam and Sadya feasts. The combination of creamy yogurt and rich coconut flavors makes Kurukku Kalan a comforting and nutritious side dish that pairs perfectly with steamed rice.     Yes, replace curd with vegan yogurt and follow the rest of the recipe.

    After adding coconut paste, avoid mixing it. vegetables might burn. Layering works best

    1 layer - water
    2 layers - vegetables
    3 layers - coconut paste 

    What should be the consistency of the katti kalan

    Traditionally it is thick. Adjust according to your preference

    What kind of vegetables should I use for kurukku kalan?

    Traditionally  yam,  Raw banana and nandren are used but you can use can any veggies of choice. 

    Will Kurukku kalan get curdled?

    No, since we grind curd  it won't

    Ingredients 

    Pressure cook

    1 raw banana

    1 nendran

    1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

    1 cup water

    1/2 teaspoon pepper

    2 green chilli

    1 teaspoon salt

    To grind

    1 cup coconut, heaped 

    3 green chilli

    1 teaspoon cumin seeds

    2 tablespoon + 1/2 cup curd

    To temper

    1 tablespoon coconut oil

    Red chilli

    Curry leaves 

    1 teaspoon mustard seeds

    Katti kalan

    Water

    Fenugreek seeds 1/4 tsp

    How to make Kurukku kalan with step-by-step pictures

    • First, Add the ingredients under “pressure cook” for 1 whistle

    • Grind the ingredients mentioned under “to grind” 

    • Add the ground mixture and a little water to the cooked vegetables; cook for 4 minutes

    • Heat coconut oil

    • Furthermore add mustard seeds, red chilli, and curry leaves; splutter 

    • Transfer to the katti kalan

    • Finally, add fenugreek seeds; mix well and cover till serving
