Thuvaiyal is light and good for digestion. Whether it is a side dish or rice accompaniment, Growing up, Paruppu thogayal for me was a different style. My Amma makes a version with urad dal and coconut. We used to have it with sesame oil. Next to coconut thogayal, this was my favorite. Well, Urad dal version is not light like this toor dal thogayal but Vengaya vetha kuzhambu, thogayal, and vadam is an addictive combo.
This version of thuvaiyal is my mother-in-law's version. I happened to taste this after marriage. One day we all went out and had lunch, I was extremely full and said I will skip dinner. MIL made this Paruppu thogayal and milagu rasam for dinner. Seeing the difference in color and texture I was asking how it is prepared. After hearing toor dal I was doubtful about the taste but it was so comforting.
Nowadays I cook both Amma's and MIL's versions alternatively. Recently we had vegetable biryani, Shorba, and cucumber raita for lunch so the next day we needed a light meal, and Paruppu thogayal and milagu rasam came into the menu. That's when I realized I haven't posted it yet.

I make the paruppu thogayal the same way and I love it with milagu kuzhambu. My mom made the best thogayal and I am getting no where close to her skills. This just reminds me of her and my carefree days 🙂

That sounds delicious and love lentil dips or mixes. I've never had it before but would definitely try some with rice or hot dosa.
