    Aadi Perukku, also known as Padinettam Perukku, is a vibrant Tamil festival celebrated on the 18th day of the month of Aadi.

    Honoring Water and Abundance: The Heart of Aadi Perukku

    Aadi, this festival coincides with the swelling of rivers during the monsoon, especially the sacred Cauvery. Families gather along riverbanks to offer prayers, light lamps, and float turmeric-tied mango leaves as symbols of prosperity and renewal.This celebration is especially meaningful for farmers, newlyweds, and women seeking blessings for prosperity and fertility.

    Sumangali Pooja and Women's Rituals

    • Married women perform Sumangali Pooja, exchanging turmeric, betel leaves, bangles, and mangalsutras to invoke blessings for marital harmony.
    • Young girls tie sacred yellow threads on their wrists and pray for a happy marriage and good fortune.
    • In some regions, newlyweds are invited to their in-laws’ homes, gifted clothes and jewelry, and a gold coin is added to the bride’s thali (mangalsutra)

    Kalandha Sadham – The Festive Feast

    • Families prepare and share mixed rice dishes, known as Kalandha Sadham, including lemon rice, coconut rice, tamarind rice, curd rice, and sweet pongal
    • These dishes are offered to the Goddess and then enjoyed as part of a riverside picnic with loved ones.
