Panakam - south Indian summer drink

jaggery-based summer drink is usually prepared on Sri Rama navami. In our tradition, we prepare panagam on sumangalai prarthanai too. Jaggery-based traditional drink is the best coolant to beat the summer heat.

    temple style panakam

Being a west mambalam resident for years, I have enjoyed panagam drink in ayodhya mandapam. Temple prasadam has a unique taste because of a few additional ingredients. If you have nutmeg and edible camphor I would recommend adding it.

    use  jaggery powder

jaggery powder melts quickly so I would recommend doing that.  If you have big pieces of jaggery, microwave them for a minute to melt jaggery.

    should I cook jaggery water?

no, it is optional. The purpose of using hot water is to melt jaggery.  I like the flavor of panagam prepared with hot water.

    jaggery lemonade

The lemon and jaggery flavor goes well.  You can adjust according to your taste.

    variation for jaggery drink

    • You can add sparkling water and serve it at a summer party
    • Crush little pepper and add for extra flavor
    • if you do not have nutmeg and edible camphor, skip it
    • add tulsi leaves for extra flavor
