Celery Poriyal is a tasty vegan side dish with celery. Celery is cooked in South Indian style and goes well with rice and roti. Healthy Celery Poriyal can be prepared within 15 minutes.

Does celery work well in Indian cooking? Yes — celery absorbs spices beautifully and works great in poriyal, thokku, and soups.

Why soak channa dal? Soaking helps the dal soften faster and cook evenly with the celery.

Can I skip coconut? You can, but coconut gives the authentic thengai poriyal flavor.

Can I add carrots or peas? Yes — celery pairs well with carrots, peas, and even cabbage.

Why add sugar? A pinch balances the natural bitterness of celery and enhances flavor.

Can I make this oil‑free? Use minimal oil or sauté in water, but tempering tastes best with coconut oil.

Does celery cook fast? Yes — it softens quickly, making this a perfect 15‑minute side dish.
