    Instant Paruppu usili | Easy Beans usili

    Paruppu usili

    It is traditional Tamil Brahmin special dish. The traditional method calls for soaking Dal and grinding. Here is an instant version.

    Should I sieve besan flour?

    No, just make sure the batter is lump free.

    Is it spicy?

    My usili is not spicy. Adjust the chili powder according to your taste

    Tips to chop beans

    Always trim the beans and fine chop.

    Vegetables for usili

    You can use any veggies of your choice

    Oil for usili

    Coconut oil gives the best flavor, you can use any oil of your choice.

    Tips for best instant usil

    1. Make sure besan idli is well cooked else be San might create a stomach problem 
    2. Always place the cooked beans in a colander. Drain the water completely
    3. Squeeze the excess water from cooked beans else usili might turn soggy
    4. Roast besan crumble well before adding cooked beans

    Ingredients

    Besan idli

    1/2 cup besan

    Required salt

    1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder

    1/2 teaspoon chilli powder 

    Asafoetida

    1/2 cup water

    Steam beans 

    225 grams beans

    Required salt

    1/8 teaspoon turmeric powder

    To temper

    1 tablespoon coconut oil

    1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds

    1 tablespoon Chana dal

    Curry leaves few

    Asafoetida

    How to make instant paruppu usili with step-by-step pictures

    • First, add all the ingredients mentioned under “besan idli”; mix well

    • Mix beans, salt, and turmeric powder on a wide plate

    • Add water to the idli pan and boil

    • place idli plate

    • Spread beans

    • place another idli plate on top
    • add sesame oil and spread

    • Gradually add the besan batter to the idli plate

    • steam cook for 10-12 minutes till idli and beans cook well

    • place beans in a colander and drain the water
    • cool the idli and crumble

    • add oil to a pan and heat

    • when the oil turns hot, add mustard seeds, chana dal, and curry leaves; splutter

    • furthermore, add asafoetida; mix well

    • add crumbles; mix well and roast for 3 minutes

     

    • squeeze the beans; add and cook for 3 minutes

    Notes

    1. you can use any veggies of your choice. Usili can also be prepared with bell pepper (Capsium), broccoli, vazhaipoo, cabbage, etc
    2. If you prefer dal mixture slightly on the crispy side add little extra oil and cook for a longer time
    3. You can cook beans in a pressure cooker/ instant pot or microwave or pan but add little salt while cooking for the best flavor
    4. Asafoetida aids in digestion and gives good flavors
    5. Coconut oil gives a nice flavor to usili
