Bread Upma is an easy instant 15 minutes tiffin recipe. It is popular street food. Great way to use leftover bread. If you are bored with regular upma recipes try this for a change😊

Should I toast bread for upma?

Toasting bread is optional but gives amazing flavor to the upma.  I have toasted bread in a bread toaster instead you can toast the bread in a pan or bake the bread or grill the bread.

What kind of bread should I use for the Indian upma recipe?

In our home, I generally buy whole wheat or multigrain bread so I use it for my upma recipe. You can use white bread or any bread of your choice

Why should I toast the bread while sauteing tomatoes?

I like the flavor of crunch bread in my bread upma and if you toast the bread while sauteing tomatoes, upma tastes the best with a slight crunch.

Can I skip ginger garlic paste?

Yes, if you don't like ginger-garlic flavor skip it.

Alternative for kitchen king masala?

You can use gram masala/ biryani masala / paneer masalq or any other masala instead of kitchen king masala.  You can also prepare masala upma without any masala

Should I cut toasted bread into squares?

In our home, we like masala bread in this way for Mumbai street style upma you can also pulse and prepare upma.

What tastes best with bread masala?

Masala bread tastes best on its own. You can also serve upma with raita varieties or ketchup. upma tastes best when served immediately

Ingredients

  • 4 bread I used whole wheat
  • 1 cup onion
  • ¾ cup tomato
  • 1 teaspoon ginger garlic paste
  • Required salt
  • 2 green chilli
  • 1 teaspoon kitchen king masala | gram masala
  • A generous portion of turmeric powder
  • Coriander leaves few

To temper:

  • ½ tablespoon ghee
  • ¼ teaspoon mustard seed
  • 1 teaspoon chana dal
  • Curry leaves few

Instructions

  • Firstly  ghee when is hot add mustard seeds, chana dal, green chili, and curry leaves let them splutter
  • Add onion and mix well
  • Furthermore add ginger garlic paste and saute till onion turns brown
  • Add turmeric powder and kitchen king masala and saute for 1 minute
  • Furthermore, add tomatoes and required salt; mix well and saute till tomatoes turn mushy
  • Meanwhile toast bread and cut it into small squares ; keep it ready
  • When tomatoes turn mushy lower the flame and add bread pieces; saute for 2-3 minutes
  • Finally, add coriander leaves; give a good mix and turn off the stove. Serve immediately

Notes

  1. toasting bread is optional. You can even bake/ grill the bread
  2.  Bread masala tastes best if served immediately
  3. You can use any variety of bread and prepare upma
  4. Ginger garlic paste is optional
  5. for extra crunch you can add some roasted cashews
