Kadala curry is a delicious and flavorful dish from South Indian cuisine that is particularly popular in Kerala. It's made with black chickpeas (kadala) cooked in a spiced coconut gravy
Chickpeas for kadala curry
traditional brown chickpea | kala chana is used for this dish but you can use white chickpeas according to your preference.
Overnight soaking
Always soak chana overnight, as it helps with digestion and faster cooking.
Pressure cooking chana
I recommend pressure-cooking chana with salt, as it helps for flavorful chickpeas.
Kadala curry serving suggestions
Appam, puttu, idiyappam, rice, and paratha
can I use coconut milk instead of coconut
no, I recommend coconut as it gives the authentic taste and texture. coconut milk might alter the consistency.
I have posted a few coconut-based recipes like Thengai Podi, Thenga Aracha Kuzhambu, Thaala kuzhambu, Paal kozhukattai, Arisi Thengai Payasam, Sweet Kozhukattai, Vegetable Stew etc.

These look quite amazing. I would love those, especially with the channa. This past week I made some potato baji, but I bought the dosa batter ready-made from an Indian store. It was just wonderful, I didn't realize they sold them that way, but I'm sure your home-made variety is just delicious. 🙂

Mmmm... Kadala curry and appam! I remember, my Malayali room mates bring the delicious Puttu and Kadala curry! I am drooling now!
Is this exactly how you prepare kadala curry traditionally? Just curious as use of ginger garlic paste is not so common in South India...
