Why steam cooking?

Steam-cooked tomatoes help for faster cooking. If you are planning to skip this step, saute tomatoes till they turn mushy then prepare thakkali thokku or use extra oil

No onion tomato rice

Tomato rice without garlic is perfect travel food. It stays good for two days at room temperature. You can also prepare this satvik rice during Navaratri or other festival days. It is also a tasty main course for get-togethers, dinner parties, etc.

Can I fine chop tomato?

I prefer fine-grinding tomatoes. Instead, you can pulse or fine chop. In that case powder or crush other ingredients well.

Can I reduce tomatoes?

Adjust the tomatoes according to the sourness. I used vine tomatoes.

Why Kashmiri chilli powder for the south Indian variety rice?

Kashmiri chilli powder gives amazing color to the thakkali sadam. Kashmiri chilli powder is not as spicy as regular chilli powder. Adjust the chilli powder according to your taste.

Amount of oil?

If you are taking this for travel add the mentioned amount of oil. For packing in school/office lunch you can reduce oil

RICE FOR tomato sadham

I have used sona masoori rice. You can use any variety of rice according to your choice. Adjust water accordingly.

Always saute tomato thokku well

add rice only after tomatoes turn mushy and the raw smell goes off. Else rice won’t taste good

OIL FOR COOKING?

For travel-friendly thakkali rice I would recommend sesame oil but you can use any oil of your choice.

SIDE DISH FOR  tomato sadam

rice goes well with varuval, raita varieties, gutti vankaya kura, kathirikai chops, plain kurma,  mirchi salan, and raita
