    Ulunthu sadam

    Ulundhu Sadam, also known as Urad Dal Rice or Black Gram Rice, is a traditional South Indian rice dish that is both nutritious and delicious. It is a wholesome meal that primarily features urad dal, a type of split black gram, combined with rice and aromatic spices. This dish is popular in Tamil Nadu and other parts of South India, where urad dal holds significant importance in regional cuisine. it is a tasty protein-rich one-pot meal with kids-friendly spice.

    can, I use white urad dal?

    Traditionally black split urad dal is used for Tirunelveli style ulundhu choru. You can try ulundhorai with white urad dal.

    Should I crush black urad dal?

    yes, it helps with proper cooking. You can use store-bought split urad dal instead of crushing. Avoid making fine powder. You can also pulse in mixie Avoid grinding.

    Should I soak rice and lentil for ulunthu sadam?

    Yes, soaking them helps for better even cooking. I used sona masoori rice hence soaked it for 30 mins. Adjust the time according to the rice you use.

    Can I use basmati rice for ulundu satham?

    Yes, you can use any rice of your choice but adjust the water accordingly.

    Can I prepare instant pot ulundhu sadam?

    Yes, cook in rice mode and do natural pressure release.

    Can I add other masala powders?

    Traditionally black urad rice is prepared with just these ingredients. You can use any spice/ masala powder of your choice to make it suit your taste bud.

    What tastes best with ulundu sadham?

    rice tastes good with  ellu thuvaiyal, raita varieties, Vadam recipe, Poriyal variety, coconut-based dishes, tamarind based recipes

    VARIETY RICE

    PRESSURE COOKER RECIPES

    PROTEIN-RICH RICE

    ingredients

    1 cup rice

    1/4 cup black urad dal

    1 + 1/2 tablespoon sesame oil 

    3 cups water

    1/4 teaspoon fenugreek seeds

    2 red  chilli

    1 teaspoon cumin seeds

    8 garlic

    Salt

    curry leaves few

    1/4 cup coconut

    How to make ulundhu soru with step-by-step pictures:

    • First, roast black urad dal till they turn aromatic

    • crush to make split urad dal

    • Wash and soak split urad dal and rice

    • Soak them for 30 minutes

    • Add sesame oil to the pressure cooker and heat

    • when the oil turns hot, add cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, red chilli, and curry leaves; splutter

    • add garlic; mix well and cook till color changes

    • furthermore, add water and boil

     

    • add soaked rice+ urad dal; mix well and boil

    • furthermore, add salt; mix well and make sure nothing is stuck to the pan

    • finally, add coconut; avoid mixing

     

    • Pressure Cook  for 3 whistles and do a natural pressure release

    • Gently open the cooker and fluff the rice
