    Arisi payaru Sadam (rice and dal) rice is a protein-rich filling meal. With minimal ingredients, it tastes great. One-pot Arisi pachai payaru sadam can be prepared in a pressure cooker and Instant Pot.

    Should I soak rice + dal ?

    Yes, whenever I am making one-pot dal-based recipes I prefer soaking rice+ dal for better soaking. I have soaked overnight. Instead you soak in hot water.  Well-soaked rice + dal yields the best Arisi pappu Sadam.

    Rice for payaru sadam

    i have used sona masoori rice . Instead you can use any rice of your choice. Adjust water accordingly.

    Can I add other masala powders?

    .You can use any spice/ masala powder of your choice to make it suit your taste bud.

    What tastes best with payaru sadham?

    rice tastes good with  ellu thuvaiyal, raita varieties, Vadam recipe, Poriyal variety, coconut-based dishes, tamarind based recipes

    What should be the ratio of rice+ dal?

    It is according to individual preference. To have more protien i have used 2:1

    How to make Arisi paruppu sadam toddler friendly?

    For kids-friendly version, you can add extra water and makes it mushy. Also to make it less spicy use pepper-cumin powder and skip sambar powder

    VARIETY RICE

    PRESSURE COOKER RECIPES

    PROTEIN-RICH RICE

    Ingredients:

    1/2 cup Rice 

    1/4 cup Pachai payaru

    1 cup + 3/4 cup Water 

    12 small onion, chopped 

    1 Tomato finely chopped

    1 tablespoon garlic, finely chopped

    1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder 

    1 +1/2 teaspoon sambar powder

    1/2 teaspoon Pepper powder

    To temper:

    1/2 tablespoon Butter/Ghee

    1 tablespoon Sesame oil 

    1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds

    1 teaspoon cumin seeds

    1 red chilli

    Curry leaves few

    1 green chilli

    how to make Arisi paruppu Sadam in Instant pot with step by step pictures:

    • Wash and soak  dal and rice overnight or few hours in hot  water and drain the water

    • Add oil and ghee to a pressure cooker and heat


    • Furthermore, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red chilli, green chilli and curry leaves; let them splutter

    • Add garlic and chopped small onions and give a good mix

    • cook till onions turn translucent

    • Add tomato and cook till for a minute

    • Furthermore add turmeric powder and sambar powder; give a quick mix and cook till tomatoes turn mushy 

    • Add soaked rice- dal, give a quick mix

    • Mix well and  make sure nothing is stick to the pan
    • Add water and mix again; boil

    • Finally add pepper powder and salt; mix well

    • pressure cook for 3 whistles ; do natural pressure release

    Pacha payaru sadam
