Should I soak rice and lentils for brown lentil pulao?

Yes soaking them helps for better even cooking. I have used sona masoori rice, hence soaked for 1 hour.

Can I use basmati rice for brown lentil pulao?

Yes, you can use any rice of your choice but adjust the water accordingly.

Can I prepare masoor dal pulao in another size instant pot?

Yes, I have used a 5-quart instant pot, but you can use any size instant pot. If you are using a bigger pot, add a little extra water. For smaller pots, reduce water; otherwise, you will end up with slightly mushy pulao. 

Can I make pulao in a pressure cooker?

Yes, follow the procedure and cook for 2 whistles, and let the pressure release naturally

Can I add other masala powders?

You can use any spice/ masala powder of your choice to make it suit your taste buds. To make it toddler-friendly, I used minimal spice.

What tastes best with pulao?

Pulao tastes good with raita varieties, Vadam recipe, Poriyal variety, and gravy

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup rice
  • 1/3 cup brown lentil
  • 1 + 1/2 tbsp ghee
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1/2 tsp poppy seeds
  • 1 green chilli
  • 1/2 tsp brown sugar/jaggery
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 tsp pepper cumin powder
  • Ginger garlic paste 1 tsp
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 onion thinly sliced
  • Salt

Instructions

  • Wash and soak brown lentils and rice
  • Soak them for at least one hour in hot water
  • Add ghee into the instant pot and turn on IP IN “sauté” mode
  • Once the IP display shows “Hot”, add fennel seeds, poppy seeds, bay leaf, and clove; give a quick mix. Let them splutter
  • Add onion and give a quick mix
  • Furthermore add ginger - garlic paste and green chilli, mix well
  • Cook the onion for 4 minutes, saute in between
  • Add sugar and a little salt and saute for 2-3 minutes until onions start to caramelize
  • Discard the water; add the soaked rice - lentil
  • Press “cancel” and mix well; make sure nothing is stuck to the pan
  • Add water, pepper- cumin powder, and salt; mix well
  • Cook in rice mode and do natural pressure release
  • Gently open the cooker and fluff the rice

How to make Brown lentil pulao with step-by-step pictures:
